Description
VIP is a 28-amino-acid neuropeptide of the secretin / glucagon superfamily, expressed broadly throughout the central and peripheral nervous systems and the immune system. It signals through VPAC1 and VPAC2 G-protein-coupled receptors to activate cAMP-dependent pathways.
Research has investigated VIP’s roles as a vasodilator, smooth muscle relaxant, neurotransmitter, and potent anti-inflammatory mediator. It has been studied in models of autoimmune disease, mast cell disorders, pulmonary disease, and circadian regulation of immune function.
