Description
AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a cell-permeable analogue of AMP and a potent activator of AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), the master regulator of cellular energy metabolism. By mimicking elevated AMP levels, AICAR triggers downstream metabolic responses normally associated with energy stress and exercise.
Research has investigated AICAR as an “exercise mimetic,” examining its effects on glucose uptake, fatty acid oxidation, mitochondrial biogenesis, and endurance capacity in skeletal muscle. It has also been studied in models of metabolic disease, ischemia, and inflammation.
